Not happy with Vimeo

]]> Boy, for $60 bucks you would think Vimeo would have A LOT LESS problems than it does, but quite frankly I’m at my wits end with that video site. I signed up thinking that I would reduce my troubles and get consistent video service, but quite frankly the free service YouTube has been a dream compared to Vimeo. Seriously folks, if you need good HD video and want to save money, there is nothing better than YouTube at the moment. I would also recommend wading through the forums on Vimeo before you purchase as well. The complaints are mounting. I know I’m ranting here a bit about Vimeo, but I suppose what upsets me the most is that Vimeo is a premium paid video site and an expensive one at that. I should have fewer problems. Probably my best decision has been to push my YouTube videos instead of Vimeo with regards to embeds because ultimately I will probably not renew my subscription with Vimeo. Having all my videos nicely on YouTube will mean I won’t have to change anything on my blogs or websites.

What are my main pet peeves regarding Vimeo? They are as follows:

1. Takes much longer than Youtube to upload and process videos even with Premium $59.95 per year accounts.

2. You are charged for embeds unlike YouTube.

3. Video quality is the same in my opinion, however the interface gives the impression Vimeo is cleaner. I see no difference.

4. Audio and Video is out of sync often as I read on their forums and around the internet. It has also happened to me as well.

5. Vimeo wastes a lot of my time and other developers as well. When I video goes bad, you have to diagnose the problem, re-upload the video, and wait lots of time for processing to complete. If you continue to have problems, it can take all day.

6. The Vimeo site loads slowly for me, especially in the Group and Forum sections within the groups. I like to read the comments provided by people but it just takes too much time for things to load on the site.

In any event, I’ll continue to do my best to enjoy Vimeo with the remaining portion of my subscription. I really would like the experience to be a good one and I do like how my videos play when things are going well. I just have to think about paying another $60 bucks shortly and I’m just not sure it’s worth it considering all of the other HD alternatives available.
